Suburbia idealizes the privatization of functions once embedded in the communal life of the village or city. The backyard becomes the park, the rec room the pub, the kitchen the bakery or restaurant. Yet like the multi-functional, yet functionally mediorce Swiss Army knife, each suburban substitute is a diminished simulacrum of the richer communal institutions from which it is derived.
